Process Paper
Last summer, I met a friend of my mother, who is a high school teacher in my home country, South Korea. While we were talking, she told me a story about Malala Yousafzai, a young female student who fought against Taliban extremists to retrieve rights of girls to education. Malala and her family believed in the right to educate boys and girls. The Taliban took away the right of education for girls in Pakistan. Malala fought to have the right of educating girls restored.
Hearing about the story, I was really impressed by Malala’s bravery that led her to achieve her goal. So, as I heard the themes of this year: leadership and legacy, I definitely wanted to research more about Malala Yousafzai. I decided to focus on Malala Yousafzai: Retrieving Women’s Rights to education for my project.
I found myriad of primary and secondary sources on Malala both online and offline. There are many videos on YouTube such as interviews, talk shows, and brief descriptions about attacks by the Taliban, so I can show much authentic vivid information through my website. Also, I saw a website made by someone very close to Malala Yousafzai who lived with her in Pakistan. I was able to get a lot of detailed information about Malala, and I emailed her to ask some questions, for which I couldn’t find the answers myself. Unfortunately, I did not get replies. However, I have a friend who knows a Pakistani student who might be able to interview and help me get some of those answers. Furthermore, there are many documents written by others to describe Malala's background, struggles, achievements, and current circumstances. Additionally, there is her own book I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban. So, I supplemented my website with details from this book.
In the interest of making a more appealing presentation, my website incorporates text, images, audio clips, video clips, and some email-interviews. My purpose is to inform viewers with accurate facts, an interesting story, and unforgettable visual representations. I divided the website into several parts, and arranged detailed information about Malala in subsections that are easy to access and understand. I presented vivid images and described them through accompanying text. Additionally, to show how Malala Yousafzai is strongly related to the themes, I included her speeches and a link to the foundation she created to help others.
I am confident to say that Malala Yousafzai is a great symbol of the themes: leadership and legacy. As a young leader in Pakistan, she doubted the status quo. In response, she took a pseudonym and worked through the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) to inform the public that education is needed for all women and girls, and sadly lacking for females in Pakistan. Saying that education can change the world, she influenced the reopening of many schools for girls by fighting against the Taliban. Moreover, she founded the Malala Education Foundation to help students in other countries to get high quality education. She also published a book, leaving a legacy to empower females around the world seeking education rights. Through my website, more people will hopefully learn of the efforts of Malala and realize that women’s rights should not be banned.
